"Over the Rainbow" (often referred to as "Somewhere Over the Rainbow") is a classic ballad song with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg (1939. EMI Feist Catalog, Inc.) It was written for the movie The Wizard of Oz, and was sung by Judy Garland in that movie.
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's album ‘Facing Future’, released in 1993 included a ukulele medley of "Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World", used in several TV commercials.
In 2000 Eva Cassidy's music was brought to the attention of British public when her version of "Over the Rainbow" was played by Terry Wogan on BBC Radio 2. Following an overwhelming response, a camcorder recording of "Over the Rainbow", taken at the Blues Alley, was shown on BBC Two's Top of the Pops 2. This version is now the preferred arrangement for most female singers.
More recently, Danielle Hope, the winner of the BBC talent show ‘Over the Rainbow’ released a version of the song, after winning the show, it was released on 23 May 2010.
